Our Programs

Reading is Fun 2 Mental

This program is a book club and the youth is responsible for reading one book per month.  Parents are responsible for meeting with their child to discuss the book and his/her progress weekly. 

The Arts

In this program, the goal is to introduce the youth to music creation through singing, songwriting, playing, and acting, etc.  Activities such as tap dancing, learning music scales, and writing jingles will be the focus.  There will be a YouTube presence as well as other social media outlets promoting the youths’ creativity. 

Debate

Youth will learn how to critically think, strategize, research and discuss seminal pieces in history and current events.  This program will run in the summer but small discussions throughout the year will take place.

Tutoring (Math/Science)

KIPO will build a working relationship with Drexel and Temple University to solicit math and science tutors.  Additionally, community partners will be sought to ensure tutoring is available and accessible.

Recreation

This program will focus on recreational activities that will promote an active minds and bodies. 

Healthy Hair

This program aims at improving the self-image of female youth as well as the male participants.  The program will inform youth about what it takes to have, maintain, and sustain healthy hair for people of color.  Additionally, the program aims to dispel the myth that one’s beauty is determined by his/her hair. 

Report Cards

Members are financially rewarded for good grades in school.  Members will receive $10 for every A and $5 for every B on his/her report card throughout the school year (not including summer school). Typically, schools do not issue report cards until 1st grade and this program is will be valid from 1st grade through 12th grade.  

Community Service

Members will regularly participate in block cleanups throughout the city of Philadelphia.  Block clean will deal with litter, trash, and sweeping.  Any big removal or large heavy trash KIPO will contact Philadelphia Department of Sanitation.  Blocks slated for clean-up will  be determined by KIPO and its staff. The community service (block clean-up) will run from April through October of each year. 

Mentoring

This program totally volunteers for the mentors.  The plan is to have established professional in various fields to mentor the youth members of KIPO.  The mentor responsibilities will include 4 contacts with the youth per year with at least two of the contacts being face to face.  The mentors will be from the Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia Fire Department, doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, counselors, business owners, entrepreneurs, and beyond. The mentoring program will be under the supervision of KIPO or the parents of each member.

Financial Literacy

This program will teach young members the value of saving money versus spending money.  This program aims at eliminating young people living from paycheck to paycheck when they reach adulthood. This program will focus on bank account savings and small investing such as purchasing bonds, certificates of deposits, and money market accounts. The goal is having the youth acquire a financial nest egg by the time of his/her high school graduation whereby the student can use to help with the cost of college or trade school completion.  

Entrepreneurship

Students will be encouraged to consider the benefits of thinking, acting, and working towards entrepreneurship. The program will inform the youth that success is not just money but freedom, career, and having options.

Languages

The program aims at teaching young members Spanish and French, possibly other languages with the goal of being proficient in speaking, reading, and writing.  

Nutrition

This program aims to inform the youth about what foods he/she consumes and the nutritional value as well as the health implications. 

Parent Education

This program is designed to support the parents of the youth with resources similarly available to the youth.  KIPO will consult with parents regularly about their child’s progress.  KIPO will contact (and parents can contact us) to discuss any comments, questions, or concerns.
